Senior Customs Controller
The Senior Customs Controller is responsible for the handling of all issues relating to Sars Customs, Transnet, and Other Government Agencies (PHO, Plant Inspection, State Vet, SABS etc.) and ensuring that customs protocols followed by the business are compliant and delivers to the business needs.
The Job
Responsibility

To assist with any Logistics calculations on Import/Export Shipments, particularly regarding tariff classification and rates of customs duty.

Multitask and prioritize all entries.
-
Quality check all entries to make sure the information submitted to SARS is accurate and correct.

Ensure all documents are correct as per SARS specification prior to EDI
-
Process and submit internal administrative appeals to SARS when required.
-
Ensuring all import permits are up to date.
-
Stay up to date with NCAP (New Customs Act Programmed) changes and apply correctly to day-to-day work.
-
Engage with Shipshape regarding NCAP changes to ensure system is updated in line with the act.
-
Approve Purchase Orders to Suppliers when needed.
-
SARS deferment and Ageing reconciliation weekly when necessary.
-
SARS deferment and Ageing reconciliation monthly when SARS statement is on hand.
-
Compiling document pack for deferment E-filing process.
-
Monthly deferment forecasting.
-
Liaising with 3rd party service providers to verify freight rates.
-
Registration of shipments on Shipshape.
-
Frame and EDI Bills of Entries (Import / Export – Sea freight, Airfreight, Road freight and Rail) to SARS within the prescribed period according to the SARS Act.

Fluent in Tariff Heading Determination and Valuation Methods.
-
Processing of VOC’s, Customs Refunds and Acquittals.
-
Assist in processing of Certificate of Origins, EUR1, SADC and GSP certificates.

Knowledge of Break Bulk and Bulk shipments.
-
Knowledge of Import / Export Control Act – Prohibited and Restricted goods.
-
Application of Import / Export Permits to the relevant departments.
-
Inform C&F Manager of SARS risk to MSA.
-
Submission of Cargo Dues via Shipshape / Ports online when needed.
-
Processing of Landing and Shipping orders.
-
Port Health and Plant Inspector Releases.
-
Facilitating SARS and SAPS stops.
-
Staying abreast of industry changes.
-
You will assist with additional duties inside the scope of your role.
Your Profile
Qualifications
-
The minimum requirement is a grade 12 or equivalent.
-
A degree or professional certification beneficial
Experience
-
At least 4-5 years’ experience in similar role
-
Industry specific experience beneficial.
Knowledge
-
Microsoft Office suite of products
-
In-depth knowledge of Customs and Excise requirements for movement of goods outside South Africa.

Familiarity with regulatory requirements and compliance in commodity trading and customs related rules
-
Working knowledge of ShipShape.
-
Solid Clearing and Forwarding Imports and Exports experience required.
-
Sound knowledge of shipping documents & procedures required.
-
Epicor knowledge an advantage.

Bond store knowledge.
